At MediaSauce, we believe that when it comes to digital media - six months equals six years. So how old does that make your website?
From the conversations I have had with various groups, I estimate the average organization hasn’t substantially improved its main website in about 36 digital years (that’s 3 human years). Wow, that website is now old enough to run for President of the United States.
During a staff meeting today, Rose Durbin, our VP-Revenue, made the comment that websites have become perishable goods. It made me laugh, because of trouble we’ve been having at my house with our refrigerator. It’s made me think an awful lot about how fast produce can perish.
I’d have to heartily agree with her and go one step further - it’s no longer about a website, it’s about your online presence. Let’s stop talking about a website - that’s such an outdated concept.
We have progressed far beyond those static digital brochures and are now building robust platforms to showcase videos, build & grow digital communities, produce regular content through blogs, collaborate through wikis, and let our employees and clients help shape our message. Plus, it’s about being many different places at once and having conversations wherever they might occur.
And, it’s not going to stop there. We’re even seeing websites that adjust their layout and appearance to best fit with how you think (hat tip to KurzweilAI.net).
What do you think - are we past the era of a single website?
